Free AI WebP to PSD converter — with layers

Convert WebP to PSD free in your browser, so older Photoshop versions can open a .webp saved from a website or a social post — or let AI split it into layers: subject, text and background.

WebP, still or animated · also JPG and PNG · up to 10 MB

  • Animated WebP: the converter here uses the first frame.
  • A transparent WebP keeps its transparency.
  • Only upload images you have the right to use.

Only need the file format? Once you choose an image you can save it as a single-layer PSD, made in your browser.

Sample · Web portrait

Studio portrait of a woman in a knit sweater split into two layers: the backdrop and the person with her hair
  • background
  • person

One WebP in, 2 transparent layers out — every one on the original canvas, so they stack back into the picture.

Web portrait

The person and the studio backdrop on separate layers, the backdrop filled in behind her. Flyaway hairs stay semi-transparent — the hardest edge there is.

2 named layers, built in your browser as a standard PSD for Photoshop, Photopea and GIMP.

WebP and Photoshop

Can Photoshop open WebP files?

Yes — Photoshop has opened WebP natively since version 23.2, released in February 2022. If you have a recent Photoshop and only want to edit the image, you do not need to convert it at all.

When converting still helps

This page is for the two cases where it does:

  • You are on an older Photoshop, or another app, that cannot read .webp — convert it to a single-layer PSD here, in your browser, in a few seconds.
  • You want the picture in layers: subject, text and background separated, the background filled in behind them.

Why saved web images look soft

Websites compress WebP hard so pages load fast. The layers cannot be sharper than the file that went in, so save the largest version the site offers.

Animated WebP

Only the first frame is used, and the PSD is a still image. To work on another frame, export that frame first.

Transparent WebP

WebP can be transparent like PNG. That transparency is kept, in the single-layer PSD and on every layer of a split one — the same way it works on the PNG to PSD page.

How it works

How to convert WebP to PSD with layers

  1. Studio portrait of a woman in a knit sweater split into two layers: the backdrop and the person with her hairstudio-portrait.webp

    Drop in the .webp

Saved from a website, a shop or a social post — still or animated.

  2. Sample · 2 layers

    The picture comes apart

Subject, text and background on separate transparent layers, aligned on the original canvas.

  3. PSDstudio-portrait.psdSample
    • person
    • background

    Edit it in Photoshop

Any version: the PSD opens in Photoshop from long before 23.2, and in Photopea and GIMP.

Who it is for

Who needs a WebP in Photoshop

  • People saving images from the web

Right-click, save, and the file is a .webp. A PSD turns it into something your editor and your layers workflow accept.

  • Older Photoshop versions

Photoshop before 23.2 cannot open WebP at all. A single-layer PSD fixes that without installing anything.

  • Social media managers

Repurpose a post you already published: pull the subject out, swap the background, re-crop for another platform.

One layer, or the image in layers

To open a WebP in an older Photoshop, one layer is enough — convert it here, in your browser. To change what is in the image, you need it in layers: that is image to layer.
